Founded on the brink of the housing market collapse, we have deep roots in organizing around affordable housing and keeping families in their homes. Today, we continue to organize around issues of affordable housing, and work hard to help Black and Latinx families achieve homeownership– an American dream that for much of our nation’s past and present has been realized largely by White families due to racist housing policies like redlining. As such, we feel it’s so important to share with you these educational pieces about the history of housing segregation, both here in Chicago and nationwide.

 

Chicago has a long history of racist housing policies that have led to a racially divided city – a major factor behind the city's reputation of violence.

In 1968, Congress passed the Fair Housing Act that made it illegal to discriminate in housing. Gene Demby of NPR’s Code Switch explains why neighborhoods are still so segregated today.
